Yes, folks. McGoo is quitting.
As one or two of my readers already know, I’ve been seriously fatigued with blogging and with an active net presence for nearly two years now. I’ve been finding it more and more difficult to generate anything at all for the blog.
Additionally, recent changes in my physical health preclude my doing this for very much longer anyway, so I figure I better “git’ while the gittin’ is good!” so-to-speak.
I started this blog back in late 2007 – initially to see what result I could get and to observe the technicalities of what does and what does not generate interest – hits, if you will. I was interested in what people liked, and why, and whether I could produce some of it.
I never got definite answers to those questions, although I did quickly migrate to the guaranteed “Snark & Tits & Ass” combination that does seem to work for most folks. I’d like to think that my own special recipe of Science Snark was well-received, as well as my Adventures at Denny’s.
I’ve learned a lot!
But most of all, my posts amused me! They were a channel to vent my spleen, express my own odd flavor of humor, and to have sillies with the world and reality in general. The world is an infinite source of stupidity – and humor – and by Circe I reaped as much of it as I could!
By the way – here are the stats for the site for the duration. I tried adding them to the post but the file was too big, or sumpin, and the post loaded slowly.
I’m not ashamed of the result! I went from nothing to a consistent near-3000 hits a day with little writing talent and no artistic talent whatsoever.
1.3-million hits in three years+ or so ain’t too bad a result. There are plenty of old blogs out there with less.
As a final experiment, over the last month I have actually been deleting past posts and associated photos to see what the result would be hit-wise. It’s been interesting.
One interesting result was that not a single commenter noticed (or, at least, remarked) on the slow disappearance of past content.
Not a peep!
That has actually not been a surprise.
Also, it confirmed that 2/3 of my daily traffic was hits to archive posts or photos. Heh. Especially photos.
FYI – the most popular photo of all time was the “Cheerleader Fisting” shot – which wasn’t nearly so naughty as is implied by the name. Google it. It’s out there. It’s long-gone from here.
The most popular post was an otherwise-unremarkable blurb back in 2008 with the words “Liver Cirrhosis” in the title. Who knew so many people would be searching on that term? Boy, did they get an eyeful!
(That’s one thing I really learned! You want hits? Put provocative words in the title! As many as possible, and don’t worry if they make any sense. Screw content! Screw tags! Its the Google & Yahoo key words that count! Bwa-ha-ha-ha!)
Anyway, over the last 5-6 weeks I’ve deleted all but the posts for 2011, and – sho’ nuff – my hits droobled off to about 1K per day – half of which are still archive hits and links from other blogs.
I’d like to express my gratitude to all my linkers & commenters! Any blogger will tell you that they live for links & comments. Its certainly true for me. Thank you for all the comments and discussions! You always made this effort a pleasure!
BTW: in all the years I was blogging, I never deleted, edited, or censored a single comment from anyone (except to correct typos!) and only deleted & banned one idiot. I guess I didn’t stir folks up enough! Pity.
I’ll leave this final post up for a week or so, and then I’ll be deleting the entire blog. Unless someone wants the site as-is. If so, contact me at the email address on the sidebar. That address will die also, in the near future, so don’t delay. It is my intention that the “McGoo” persona eventually disappear completely. The avatar will disappear when the blog does.
It’s been a great ride! Thanks again!
And best wishes to all…
Oh! Here!
This was the first “naughty” photo I ever posted. Here’s the rest of my “Chocolate” collection:
And,

I will certainly miss having you around McGoo. I wish you well in whatever you are doing. May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be always at your back, and may you be in Heaven a half-hour before the devil knows you’re dead.
Fair winds and following seas!
March 1, 2011 at 7:34 pm
NOOOO!!!!! Say it ain’t so, McGoo! At least come back every now and then, please!
March 1, 2011 at 7:55 pm
Well played, Sir, well played. The choco-chix, especially the chocolate nipple and the tub of pudding, are sublime.
Thanks for all the snorts. You must promise to spoil Brrrt to within an inch of his silly feline lives. Send a postcard now and then.
March 1, 2011 at 7:57 pm
Sorry to see you go…but if you must, all the best to you!
March 1, 2011 at 8:33 pm
Adios, my innertube friend! I had a blast at the ol’ McGoo stompin’ grounds.
Hope you stay healthy in your waning years…heh!
Drop in at coldfury.com sometime and listen to Mike’s newest album/CD/record, it’s well worth a listen.
Seriously, take care and keep your powder dry.
March 1, 2011 at 8:53 pm
I’d noticed your posts were getting few and far between, but didn’t realize you were planning to quit. It’s a shame; I’ll miss your 5th Dan Snark-fu. And your talent for photo-captioning.
And now I’ll never know if Burt made it back to his homeworld of Planet Fellatio. Or how Brrrt is getting along.
I trust you’ll still drop by Soylent Green, Sweasels, and the other regular idiots. Iowntheworld is another blog I have absolutely nothing to do with, but visit regularly. And if ever you find yourself visiting the Gulf Coast in the MeatWorld, drop me an email. We can go grab a brew or two.
March 1, 2011 at 8:56 pm
Well McGoo, you sir will be sorely missed. Your snark and snootch will be sorely missed, in equal parts. I presume you will also be discombobulating your other fabulous site as well? Thank you sir for all that you have done, I salute you !
Live well, laugh often, and spoil the cat (they command it anyways).Fare thee well.
March 1, 2011 at 10:30 pm
Hate to see you go-may the best you’ve seen be the worst you will see
March 1, 2011 at 11:13 pm
McGoo, Damn if that isn’t the shits.
You do realize that removing your archive is seriously a fucking crime?
You are seriously deleting?
Deleting?
I’m sorry, McGoo, but even if you don’t want the thing, you have to burn down the whole fucking village?
Of course what is yours is yours, but it seems a shame.
I really like your work, and you’ve always been so kind. A shame.
I pray for your health as well as your happiness.
Very best regards from a big fan.
March 1, 2011 at 11:42 pm
McGoo – Good luck to you. You will be missed (but I hope you come back to us).
March 1, 2011 at 11:54 pm
McGoo, It’s been a pleasure. Enjoy your acres in the “outback” of the Great River City, spoil the cat/cats and if you ever get west, come see us some time; I’ve a place just made for watching sunsets. email or thru my Witch’s blog will do
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish (That’s a JOKE, Sir, JOKE, I say //Foghorn Leghorn off)
Mcgyver, Out
March 2, 2011 at 12:20 am
Well, crud! But I understand. Steamboat, the deal about your health being a problem really troubles me. I guess you don’t want to give details, and I can respect that. But, for what good my prayers are these days, you’ve got ‘em.
I’m gonna miss your blog. Well, not really.
No, seriously, EXCELLENT WORK! From an extremely puny blogger to a guy with hits in the multiple thousands daily…good riddance! Nyuk!
Hold it in the road, my friend. Let us know when you’re ready to come back…I’ll be waiting.
March 2, 2011 at 4:45 am
So you finally pulled the plug. Been there. Done that. Hopefully things will change, your health will improve and you’ll return full of piss and vinegar.
Until then, wishing you well.
March 2, 2011 at 5:35 am
McGoo, it’s been a pleasure and an outrage.
I’ll miss the inspiration and Basque wisdom, and the snooch of course. Wait a minute….whew, it’s still there. Thank the pr@n gods.
I am privileged to have been part of your pseudo-social experiment.
I will miss you. Be well. And make sure the skunks keep eating your shit.
March 2, 2011 at 6:36 am
S. Boat McGoo, we barely knew ye…
Green grass and running water, kind sir. I regret “losing” you so soon after discovering you, but I trust that this is the best thing for you, and, loving enlightened self-interest the way I do, I salute you for doing what makes sense for you.
Take care. You claim to have no special gift for writing. I appreciate your modesty, but that’s just plain wrong. You have great talent, and it means a lot to a lot of people. Please take care of you.
March 2, 2011 at 6:51 am
Never showed up here as often as I should have. You have a great way with words, and your photo skills (selection wise) are admirable. Hope your health improves, and perhaps with time your batteries will recharge. There is far far too much going on out there requiring one of the good strong voices to keep speaking out loud and strong.
In any case, keep your powder dry and like Larry mentioned above, Fair Winds and Following Seas!
Guy @ Snugg Harbor.
March 2, 2011 at 6:54 am
I saw this last night, and couldn’t comment through the tears.
I worry about the “turn” you’ve had regarding your health. But I understand your reasoning for quitting. I recall you suspending your blog for a while, and how we all grieved about it!
And now, you are leaving the interwebs, and we shall surely grieve again. I know I’m but a lowly commenter, but please keep those morons that are closer to you updated as to your health. And though you are deleting your email account, remember you still have ours.
Best wishes and prayers to you, McGoo. I hardly knew ye, but I lurve ye!!
March 2, 2011 at 6:54 am
McGoo,
Godspeed in all your future ventures. I enjoyed your blog, and will miss the humor and snarkery. You and your blog will be missed.
I’m sure everyone else who comments here would say the same, but if ever you get the urge to post something but don’t want to go to all the trouble of starting a blog, you would be a welcome guest.
Oh yeah, and hope you find that sci-fi story you posted about earlier.
Take care, and hope your health improves.
March 2, 2011 at 8:44 am
You will be sorely missed! When you were down before, I came at a minimum of weekly to see if you were back yet. When you were, I was verrah heppeh! You are always welcome at mine, btw. Come visit, make comments, insert snark as thou wilt!
This really sucks, you know? Or should that have been you know this really sucks!
March 2, 2011 at 9:16 am
Gonna miss you, McGoo. Come back now and then, and good luck with the health issues.
March 2, 2011 at 9:50 am
so long McGoo! your snark will be missed!
March 2, 2011 at 10:09 am
McGoo:
Sorry I didn’t catch it earlier, but life (combind with a general exhaustion and frustration with the bullshit 5th grade drama that has been gripping some of my favorite sites recently) precluded me from seeing your farewell post.
Be safe. Take care. And thank you for letting me post here.
March 2, 2011 at 10:10 am
oh, and don’t you still owe me $50?
March 2, 2011 at 10:25 am
Alas, you’re quitting. Again. So when will A&A III start? And what am I supposed to do with this collection of strange-ass pictures and porn links I’ve got for you? (you never did run the pic of the trunkasaurus)
Ok, it was fun while it lasted, and thanks for expanding my vocabulary and silliness horizons.
Get well if you can, and stop by the old liberal stomping grounds when you’re able.
PS – your graph looks suspiciously very much like whats-his-name’s Global Warming graph. I call fowl.
Seriously, I do. I’m out there at dawn going “chuck chuck chickee!” but nothing ever shows up.

Wow…it is a sad thing to see someone so articulate leave the blogosphere. You will be sorely missed.

As soon as I find something interesting, it goes away. Sorry I jinxed you. Gonna miss the pic of that chick in the bikini at the waterpark.
March 2, 2011 at 2:31 pm
Sorry to see you go McGoo! It’s an End of an Era. I must echo everybody’s comments here and say you’ll be greatly missed. Take care of yourself and I hope your health issues improve.
March 2, 2011 at 2:31 pm
I first had the pleasure of meeting you via Soylent Green back in early 2009. Then I had a (almost) two year hiatus to deal with pregnancy and screaming-crying-baby syndrome. And, then, when I’m finally coming back, you call it quits! Sigh. . . . It’s been fun reading your quirky comments, McGoo. And I hope you stick around and offer your thoughts on life. Good snark is hard to find these days.
And maybe you should keep your blog for the world to see. Just imagine. A thousand years from now when the Apes take over, they will see your blog and think that maybe those hairless humans weren’t too bad after all. And they were damned funny.
March 2, 2011 at 3:02 pm
Dang! You’re putting a gap in my blog viewing hierarchy? Guess I gotta go back to perusing Google Images for 44DD again.
Best of luck to you.
March 2, 2011 at 4:07 pm
Farewell McGoo! Many thanks for the excellent blog and photos. I’m sorry you’re hanging up the keyboard.
Also, I hope your health is good and might allow you to pop in once in a while. if not, hope to see you in the comments of other bloggers.
March 2, 2011 at 4:13 pm
Never commented much here McGoo, but stopped by almost every day to see what was new. Have enjoyed coming here since I found the blog a couple of years ago. I’ll miss it and you. Take care my friend. And I hope your future endeavors are as entertaining as this.
March 2, 2011 at 4:13 pm
Thank you for two years of fun and a little outrage.
If you should ever decide to restart, please keep an email list to announce it, I’d love to see your wit again.
Fair winds and following seas old man.
March 2, 2011 at 5:41 pm
Sad we are to see you go, McGoo. People always say that the Internet is forever, but I guess that ain’t entirely true.
You will be missed. Do stop in at your old haunts from time to time.
March 2, 2011 at 5:46 pm
Oh yeah, and please keep us advised as to Brrrt’s doings. I’m honored to have assisted in the selection of his name.

March 2, 2011 at 6:19 pm
Sorry to see you go.
I rather liked the chocolate.
March 2, 2011 at 7:22 pm
Well damn. Another source of snark gone off of the map. The snark-verse has now significantly shrunken. Something to do with Entropy?
BTW, you still owe us the outcome of your corrosion experiment, and a map or clues for your hidden syringe stash.
Where am I going to find out how Brrrt is doing?
So many questions left unanswered.
But you had an itch that needed scratching, and that itch must have gotten sufficiently scratched.
Fly high, you’ve got friends out here who can and will help if you need it! Don’t be a stranger.
March 2, 2011 at 7:26 pm
Well, You certainly are, and will continue to be one of the greats of the blogosphere. I will miss your wonderful sense of humor and overall bad/kickassery. The Chocolate is nice too. Your always welcome at the G.I.C., \\// live long and prosper\\//

McGoo, I first stumbled on to your site from mitchieville, about two weeks after you began. Been here ever since. Thanks loads for all the entertainment.

March 2, 2011 at 10:53 pm
I am sorry to hear about the demise of one of my favorite Blogs.
My favorite feature is your feral kitten. I recently trapped a feral
kitten at the paper mill I work for as an electrician. He was suffering
from intestinal parasites and a raging case of the shits.
$400 later, Slow Poke II is an ideal house cat if you discount the fact that he is a psycho killer feral kitten who looks like a Cheetah on meth!
I have a story to tell;
Electricians tame a feral family.
A flea infestation causes management to initiate the “The Great Cat
Round Up.”
We screwed with the middle manager who was put in charge. This
included psychological warfare, rigged traps, etc.
Mill closes.
I moved to another mill and managed to entice a female juvenile cat
to within inches of me. Slow Poke I was killed by a Possum two days
later.
The story I have to tell will amuse you as much as your accounts of
Brrt have amused me.
March 2, 2011 at 10:58 pm
All the best. You will be missed.
Fair winds and following seas. May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
And thanks for the mammaries.
March 2, 2011 at 11:08 pm
Another one bites the dust. Too bad, I really enjoyed your commentary about your place, the barn and workshop and all. It really made me think about what I want for myself. Godspeed.
March 2, 2011 at 11:25 pm
The common theme here?
“So Long and Thanks for All the Tits”.
That’s a pretty damned good legacy!
March 3, 2011 at 12:01 am
McGoo, at least leave your sendoff up for other peeps to see that you’ve been awesome.
March 3, 2011 at 12:24 am
Damn!
I leave the interwebs (and my normal life) for a few short weeks and come back to the following;
1. My spousal unit has adopted a kitten.
2. Mubarak is on the outs in Egypt.
3. Wisconsin seems to have been transformed into Greece west.
and last but not least…
4. A website I only recently found and have come to adore like a shooter of single-malt scotch or a slow, well-administered blowjob, is going into hiatus.
What the hell?
I’m never going to attend a training conference again. Screw the job.
A kitten!? I don’t hate cats; they hate me.
Who gives a rats ass about Egypt? Or Wisconsin?
There are very few sites that can make me laugh beer through my schnozz and yours was one.
I never knew what I’d find when I clicked on the bookmark. Likely as not, I found pleasure of one sort or another.
So I guess I just need to say “Thank you!” Steamboat, tip my hat for a job well done, and wish you well in the future.
63 years has shown me that the only constant in life is change and we have to adjust and adapt.
I only wish I’d found your site sooner so I could have absorbed more of your incalculable humor and wisdom (and seen more boobies) than I did.
Again, really the only thing I can say to show you the impact you had on me is a simple but sincere, “Thank you.”
Now I gotta go see what the damned kitten if yowling about…

If his unpleasant demise has in some way enlightened the rest of you as to the grim finish beneath the glossy veneer of blogging life and inspired you to change your ways, then his departure carries with it an inherent nobility, and a supreme glory. We should all be so fortunate. You say poor McGoo? I say poor us.
March 3, 2011 at 2:49 am
A sad loss to the blogosphere.
I wish you well in whatever you turn your hand and mind to!
March 3, 2011 at 4:55 am
We’ll indeed miss you, my friend! Personally, having been in the same position, blogwise, healthwise, etceterawise, I was being patient with the content slow down, since good things are indeed worth waiting for.
Best of luck in all your future endeavors!

I’m sorry to hear about your health issues, Steamboat. I loved your blog…for YEARS, and you will be missed.
And btw, maybe it’s time you pay Eddie the Bear back that &50 you owe him.
March 3, 2011 at 2:12 pm
Good snark is hard to find, and McGoo you are a master. You will be missed. I Wish you and yours all the best.
March 3, 2011 at 4:10 pm
Say it ain’t so! Aw, man, this makes me sad, McGoo. I haven’t been around much since I started school, but I have enjoyed your humor and your snark. Fare thee well, my friend; take some time to enjoy yourself, now that you’re unfettered from teh interwebz.

March 4, 2011 at 1:44 am
For the record, I noticed the past posts disappearing because I had periodically in my boredom meandered thru em.
Understand your decision, it sucks, but all things come to a close and all that.
Shall ber missed!
I’d offer to take over, but I haven’t nearly the snark to offer, and you don’t know me from Adam either. Would that CBullit or someone would!
March 4, 2011 at 7:29 am
Just so you know, I copied this post, your header–with its final Philip K. Dick farewell, and your Gravatar–which I see has now disappeared as well.
Assuming I too don’t chuck everything in the interval, it will appear again in one year’s time.

Thanks Eddie, that was a good thing you did for the community.
March 4, 2011 at 8:07 pm

Damn… sorry to hear that McGoo. Go take care of yourself and keep in touch from time to time.
Silver lining y’all? Maybe McGoo will become a more frequent commenter at all of our sites when he gets feeling better and has no soapbox of his own to pontificate from.
And the award for best comment goes to Lemur King: “So long, and thanks for all the tits.” LOL.

Magoo! I’m sorry to read of your health problems. I hope you feel better and take care of yourself. When blogging starts to be a “chore” or a Drag” and isn’t fun for you anymore, it is time to wind it down. But, I hope you saved your fav & best posts somewhere, if only for yourself to entertain yourself.
I’m glad that Eddie is keeping the site up. It’s so big and brought so much entertainment for people. Put up the archives. Where would world history and art be if our ancestors decided to burn all the great artifacts????? Take Care & say hi sometime.
